Children's Care

We are an important part of the Business Communication faculty.  Choosing Health and Social Care or Children’s Care, Learning & Development is a great decision for lots of reasons.  It is an area of work that provides unlimited opportunities to make differences to people’s lives.  Students will gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to life, and more importantly, transferrable to the work place.

Qualification subjects studied in KS4 in Year 9, 10, 11

BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Children’s Care,  Learning and Development

BTEC qualifications are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications and this Certificate will offer a bite-sized opportunity to consider areas of children’s care, learning and development.  Pupils need to have an interest in children and/or working with children.

If pupils choose this particular course they will have to undertake 60 hours of compulsory work experience in the childcare sector; this means that the one week of work experience in year 10 will be completed within the child care sector and additional days will be done visiting a local child care setting throughout year 10 and 11 to observe children at play.  The First Certificate is the equivalent to 2 GCSE’s A*-C and graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level.  Assessment for this qualification is 100% coursework.

Pupils will study 3 core units during the 2 year course.

Unit 1 Understanding Children’s Development

Unit 2 Keeping Children Safe

Unit 3 Communication with Children and  Adults

On completion of the BTEC First Certificate, pupils can progress onto the BTEC First Diploma course, or alternatively onto NVQ courses at levels 2 or 3 – this qualification is for pupils who have an interest in following a career in the child care sector.

The BTEC courses are ideal preparation for progression to more detailed study of health, social care and early years.  This could be an A Level course or a BTEC National qualification for example.  Some students may progress to working or training in a specialised area within health, social care and early years’ field.  This qualification is ideal for those thinking of a career in nursing, social work, psychology, education, counselling and other job roles within the NHS and Education sector.
